The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 (EPA, 1986) is India's principal environmental legislation enacted to provide for the protection and improvement of the environment and for matters connected therewith. The Act was passed following India's participation in the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, Stockholm, 1972, and came into force on 23 May 1986.
