The Petroleum Act, 1934 is the principal legislation governing the import, transport, storage, production, refining, and blending of petroleum in India. The Act was enacted to consolidate and amend the law relating to petroleum and to provide a uniform regulatory framework across the country. It forms the legal basis for the Petroleum Rules, 2002 and other regulations administered by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO).
